WATERFRONT WHALE TALES
A collaboration with Wild in Art, Art Pharmacy, Stagekings and Milestone Creative.
Commissioned by Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative, a range of Artists were invited to participate in painting a whale tail that would feature in an art trail throughout Sydney.

Gawura
The event consisted of a four-week outdoor exhibition of up to 30 life-sized, individually painted whale tail sculptures along the Inner Sydney Western Harbour waterfront walk from Walsh Bay to Blackwattle Bay. In an aim to engage participants in a “treasure hunt”, supported/enabled by an app with geo-mapping tools and redeemable rewards via the merchants and attractions across the Precinct. The Whale tails were on display for approximately two months before being auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the Kids Cancer Research Project.

Titled Gawura, this is the story of migration and the subtle changes across our landscape.
The colours show my respects to the sea and the waterways which feed into it. The dots and circle patterns are symbolic of the tides and swell. The overall artwork is an acknowledgement to the many whale stories that are ingrained in our culture along the east coast from country to country. The Whale dreaming is layered with both sacred and spiritual knowledge. Different stories told by different people help keep creation stories and everyday knowledge part of culture, each layer holding different knowledge systems to ensure important information is maintained.
