The festival featured 4 artists, including myself, Pilar Basa, STYNA, and Heavy Mental Art who each painted a live mural over the 3 nights. The murals were 2m x 6m and were an interactive feature for festival goers to meet and chat with the artists.

The expression of interest had come through Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Leichhardt, NSW. I was excited to find out that I was one of the successful artists that would get the opportunity to be part of the festival. Boomalli provided all the support for me as an artist to engage with the event organisers and the council which made the entire process simple and streamlined. The event kicked off with all artists preparing their mural surfaces. It wasn’t long until the crowds started rolling in and painting became a stop-start race as we engaged with festival goers to discuss the concepts and mediums being used. It was an amazing opportunity to talk to people who came back on consecutive nights to see the progress and get their reactions.

The murals were all completed by the end of the third night and have since been put in storage until the council can find a location for their instalments.

Submitting a concept was part of the application process. The digital artwork that the mural is based off has since been licence by Edmen Community Staffing Solutions as well as People Infrastructure Group (PeopleIn). The artwork has been a widely successful addition to my artist portfolio.

‘Our Community’ 2022 celebrates the melting pot of diverse people that make up our communities.

While we are all individuals with our own unique experiences and stories, we have a common connection through people and place. This is represented by the connecting circles throughout the artwork. Whether these places are our workplaces, neighbourhoods, or cities, we are all connected. The physical lands on which we make these connections has been cared for and looked after for tens of thousands of years. They are laden with culture and stories and knowledge, stories which we are all now a part of. We all have a responsibility to look after these places and be mindful of the story we are leaving behind for future generations.
